Signs your chimney is asking for help
Any one of these is worth a phone call. Two or more and you should stop using the fireplace until someone looks at it.
- Smoke rolls back into the room when you light a fire
- A strong campfire or tar smell from the fireplace, especially in humid weather
- Black, shiny or tar-like buildup you can see above the damper
- Water stains on the ceiling or wall around the chimney
- Chunks of brick, mortar or concrete in the gutters or on the lawn
- White chalky staining on the outside of the masonry
- Scratching, chirping or flapping sounds inside the chimney
- You have never had it swept, or you just bought the house
What the neighbors say
“They put down drop cloths before they even brought the brushes in, and the vacuum ran the whole time. Not one speck of soot in the living room. Showed me photos of the cracked crown instead of just telling me about it.”
“We had a leak for two years and three different guys blamed the roof. Hero found it in twenty minutes — flashing, exactly like they said. Fixed, sealed, no more stain on the ceiling.”
“Our insurance company wanted documentation for the wood stove. They handled the liner, the paperwork and the inspection, all in one day. The tech explained everything without a single scare tactic.”
“Fourth year in a row using them. Same tech, on time, in and out in an hour, and he always shows me the camera footage. That is worth a lot.”
“Our house is from 1898 and I was terrified someone would slap modern mortar on it. They matched the color and the mix. You genuinely cannot tell where the new work starts.”
“Raccoon in the chimney with babies. They removed them humanely, cleaned out about three feet of nesting junk, and capped it. No more wildlife, no more smell.”

Chimney questions, answered like a human
How often should a chimney be swept?
The National Fire Protection Association calls for an annual inspection of every chimney, fireplace and vent, with sweeping whenever there is measurable buildup. In practice: if you burn wood regularly, once a year. If you burn a cord or more a season, once a year without exception. Gas fireplaces and furnace flues still need that yearly look even though they leave no soot.
What area does Hero Chimney Sweep cover?
We are based in Monsey, NY and cover a 30-mile radius — all of Rockland County, southern Orange County, western Westchester, and Bergen and Passaic Counties in New Jersey. That is 97 towns and villages. If you are not sure whether you are in range, call us and we will tell you straight.
How much does a chimney sweep cost?
A standard fireplace sweep with a Level 1 inspection runs about $189 to $349 depending on the flue and access. You get a flat price before we start and it does not change once we are on the roof. Repairs are quoted separately in writing, with photos.
Will you make a mess in my house?
No. Drop cloths, shoe covers and a HEPA-filtered vacuum sealed at the fireplace opening for the entire sweep. Soot goes into the machine. If we leave a mark, we clean it — that is not a marketing line, it is the job.
Can you come out the same day?
Often, yes. We hold same-day slots for emergencies — chimney fires, storm damage, animals stuck in a flue, smoke coming into the house. For routine sweeps we are usually booking within the same week, though fall books up fast.
Are you licensed and insured?
Fully licensed and insured, and we will send a certificate of insurance directly to your HOA, property manager, insurer or attorney on request — no chasing us for paperwork.
